Valparaiso Fire Biggest Disaster in Chilean History

Santiago, April. 13. Some 3,000 people were evacuated due to forest fire started Saturday afternoon in the hills of Valparaiso that has proven difficult to control, the mayor of this district Chilean, Jorge Castro said.

After predicting the fire may consume at least 500 homes, he said that to date there has been no record of an emergency of this magnitude in the country .

Atlanta Firefighter Sgt. Frank Guinn Killed Training for Triathlon

A bicyclist who was killed Friday after being struck by a car in New Orleans East was an Atlanta firefighter training for Sunday's Ironman triathlon. His brother-in-law, who was cycling with him and also struck, is in critical condition.

The deceased was identified as 36-year-old Frank Guinn, a nine-year veteran of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, according to a department news release. He leaves behind a wife and three daughters.

Off-Duty Firefighter Aids Trapped Woman

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – An off-duty Portland firefighter was an on-duty hero Tuesday morning, comforting and treating a woman trapped underneath a van until emergency crews could arrive.

According to Portland Fire & Rescue Lt. Rich Chatman, around 8:40 a.m. a 50-year-old woman was walking along NE 65th and Glisan when a van backed into her, pinning her underneath.

The driver of the van reportedly never saw the victim.

Midland TX Firefighter Battling Cancer

Midland TX - The Professional Firefighter Association of Midland is reaching out for the community's help in raising money for one of their firefighters who is currently battling cancer.
Aaron Hughes, whose been with the Midland Fire Department for 6 years, was diagnosed last month with Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

The PFAM is selling t-shirts, wrist bands, and aluminium water bottles to help Hughes with traveling and medical expenses as he and his family go through this difficult time.
Wrist bands and t-shirts can be purchased at the Central Fire Station in Midland.

Huntsville, AL officer injured in shooting

Huntsville Police shot and killed a gunman after he opened fire on officers early Friday morning.

The incident began when officers were called to a house at 2014 Stanford Drive, off of Governors Drive, at 1:02 a.m. for a report of a fight.

When officers arrived on the scene, a man they later identified as William Arthur Stogner opened fire with a long gun. One officer, Jason Moore, was shot in the face. Two other officers returned fire.

Officer rejoining force after leg amputated, K-9 partner killed

ANDERSON – A police officer who was shot in both legs almost two years ago has recovered and rejoined his K-9 group.

Marty Dulworth, 37, has been a member of the Anderson police department for 13 years. On July 26, 2012, he responded to a shooting in Pendleton. Various law enforcement agencies were called to the scene. Officer Dulworth was with his K-9 Kilo.

An innocent bystander, Neal Shull, was killed. Kilo was also killed. The suspect, Jim Kenneth Bailey, was found dead. Dulworth was shot twice.

Blaze that killed Boston firefighters blamed on unpermitted welders

BOSTON (AP) — Sparks sprayed by welders working on an iron railing caused the fire that tore through a Boston brownstone, killing two firefighters and injuring 13 other people, officials said Friday.

Boston Fire Commissioner John Hasson said it did not appear anyone had obtained a permit for work on the railing behind a building attached to the apartment building that burned.

K-9 that helped search for Boston bombing suspects euthanized

CONCORD, Mass. —He's been her partner since he was just a puppy and has worked with her on countless cases, but now Concord Police Officer Sylvia Toumayan is saying goodbye to her German shepherd, Charik.

Suffering from canine degenerative myelopathy -- a progressive disease of the spinal cord in older dogs --- Charik, 8 ½, had to be euthanized, and a memorial service is being held for the dog Friday.
